Pickleball was introduced to Ballina by Jenny Seymour in 2020 after she saw the sport on TV and thought it would be good to introduce it to the new sports facility - the Ballina Indoor Sports Centre (BISC).  The staff were very supportive of pickleball and it soon became established with a very friendly atmosphere.

The sport grew gradually but the growth was slowed, as many things were, by the impacts of the Covid 19 outbreak. 

Pickleball started to build momentum again as restrictions were eased but suffered another set-back when Ballina suffered flooding in 2022.  This flooding severely affected the whole region and, even though Ballina was not as badly hit as other towns, there was considerable damage and many people were evacuated as homes and caravan parks were inundated.

The BISC became an evacuation centre and instead of pickleball nets and courts, the area was almost wall-to-wall mattresses.  Fairly soon many of the evacuees were housed in better accommodation including motels and the BISC became a storage and distribution point for donations of clothes, food and bedding. A call went out from The BISC for volunteers to help manage the HUGE amount of donations and the pickleball players rallied.  As we were frequently folding and sorting clothing and bedding, we were affectionately referred to as the 'Ballina Pickleball Manchester and Haberdashery Department'.  This further melded our group together.

When we finally got back into the swing of pickleball we decided to form a steering group to investigate forming a club.  As we were the only centre in the Northern Rivers Region playing pickleball at the time, we decide to run with that name and subsequently formed the club, Northern Rivers Pickleball.

We held holding our inauguration entitled 'Zero-Zero-Two First Serve' on September 3rd 2022.
